In the village of Irbid, I visited a man who spoke with me freely but did not want his picture taken. He was a former Syrian military officer who could not carry out orders to kill other Syrians. Anonymity protects him and his family members still in Syria.
He shared something with me that I hope all Lutherans in Canada will take to heart and feel confident that our partner in Jordan, the Lutheran World Federation, is developing a good reputation for Lutherans worldwide. He told me that of all the NGOs, LWF distributed the best quality commodities.
His comparisons were interesting. For instance, the heaters the LWF distributes are fully enclosed, cool to the touch but put out enormous heat while using very little gas. Those distributed by many other NGOs have an open flame that does not direct heat. They are not safe for children and are more suited to cooking than heating. His blankets were very thick and the rug he received for his floor is much larger than non-LWF items.
His gratitude was genuine and he asked that I tell Canadians how much the assistance has improved his life.
