Sweaters will bring some extra warmth to this Syrian family

Forty-two year old former policeman Basel Al Ahmed from Daraa in Syria invited me to see for myself what life in his tent at the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan was really like.

It is very difficult for him to protect his family – his wife and five children – from the winter elements. The blankets that were issued to him by the UN are very thin. In fact, to be even a little bit comfortable each of them has to have seven. That’s 49 in all. And the result in the morning? Frost has formed on the top layer every time.

The whole family was very excited to learn about the 60,000 sweaters on the way to them from Canadian Lutherans. They are very grateful for the support and asked me to thank Canadians for their generosity.

The first and second shipments of sweaters are scheduled to arrive in late January and early February.
