On December 20 we loaded our second sweater shipment for Syrian relief. In addition to our first shipment in November there are now 47,706 sweaters on their way to the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan. We are preparing our third sweater shipment to depart early in the New Year.
This couldn’t have been accomplished without the help of those who donated sweaters, and the many volunteers helping us prepare the shipments in Winnipeg. We’ve welcomed many from Manitoba’s Lutheran community, and met some new people as well, including members of Manitoba’s Syrian community who are looking for ways to help fellow Syrians back home.
Khaled AlTaweel and Ousama Rachid heard about the shipment through the Manitoba Islamic Association and the Syrian Assembly of Manitoba. They say many fellow members wanted to get involved when they heard about the sweater drive.
“We are enjoying working here because the stuff we’re packing here may help our brothers in the Jordan camp – regardless of religious background,” says Khaled.
