Helmi’s pennies

“Ninety-eight year old Helmi Kuznez got the ball rolling,” said Pastor Matthew Diegel of Immanuel – Our Saviour Parish in Thunder Bay. “She gave me eighteen pennies to put toward the Canadian Lutheran World Relief penny drive for mosquito nets.”

Before they knew it, they were rolling 12,000 pennies at Our Saviours and Immanuel raised another $70. Twenty families are going to be more secure from the ravages of malaria due to Helmi’s concern and compassion. Helmi is blind and lives in an assisted living complex but I learned when Pastor Matthew and I visited her that does not diminish her passion for caring for others.

Pastor Diegel was even more pleased about the results when a prominent Thunder Bay physician, who was an expert on malaria, confirmed that there are drugs and pills available, but the best solution for prevention of malaria is the use of treated mosquito nets.
